Introduction

Skills and Career for Youth (SKY) is a set of events that carries the theme of soft skills development and nation-building intellectual discourse. It aims to instil in its participants the necessary critical-thinking and soft skills required to excel in post-university life. SKY consists of two main events; Policy-Making Competition (PMC) and Career Empowerment Day (CED). As the name states, PMC is a policy-making competition that folds out through a set of stages- open discussion, group discussion and open debate. The policy created will revolve around contemporary and Malaysian or ASEAN centric issues. The aim is to spark critical thought and reasoning in students on the latest issues gripping the nation and suggest solutions or ideas to navigate and overcome such issues. CED, on the other hand, is an event that is purely centred in providing career exposures and networking opportunities to students. Several established companies and organisations participate in CED every year. CED also serves as a preparation for assessments and interviews. The sessions that make up CED are as follows: Companies’ Sessions; Mock Interviews; Mock Assessments; and Career Exhibition

For the year 2019, SKY was hosted for its fifth time since its inception in 2015. The topic for PMC 2019 was ‘Industrial Revolution 4.0: The Rise of a Smart Nation’. This topic was chosen as it is one of the main issues facing the nation, standing in its growth to become a developed country. The issue was approached through six ‘governmental departments’, which are Transportation, Healthcare, Education, Finance, Human Capital and Security. PMC received full participation of 7 teams, consisting of 30 participants from all over the UK. It was hosted for almost a day. Several esteemed guests were invited to officiate and adjudicate the event including the education attaché from Education Malaysia London, En. Hanizam Bin Darham. The winning team continued their policy-making journey at a higher stage, as they were automatically admitted to the finals of the Malaysian Youth Policy Symposium (MYPS) in Malaysia. This is due to SKY’s affiliation with Malaysian Students Global Alliance (MSGA), the host of MYPS.

CED took place a week after PMC and it was no less better, as it involved the participation of 11 companies and organisations including corporate giants UMW Corporation Sdn Bhd and Employees Provident Fund (EPF or KWSP). A great turn up of students were received for CED, amounting to almost 120 participants. They were keenly involved in all the sessions held on the day.
